1. Is the no-logs audit recent — and by a named firm?

A policy page is a promise; an audit is evidence. Look for a named auditor (Deloitte, PwC, Cure53, Securitum) and a date within the last two years. A provider still waving 2022 paperwork is selling you an old promise.

2. Where is the company legally based?

Jurisdiction decides which government can legally demand data. Outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances (Panama, Switzerland, Romania, British Virgin Islands) is stronger than inside it (Netherlands, US, UK, Australia). RAM-only servers matter too — nothing on disk means nothing to seize.

3. What does it renew at — not what does it cost today?

The advertised monthly price is almost always a first-term price. Find the renewal rate before you buy: a $3.49/month plan that renews at $139.08/year is a different product from the one in the headline. Set a calendar reminder for the month before renewal.

4. Can you pay without handing over a card?

If privacy is the point, the checkout matters too. Bitcoin, Ethereum and other coins via a payment processor — or directly, as Proton VPN accepts Bitcoin — keep the subscription off your card statement. Check whether crypto-bought plans auto-renew; some don't.

5. Does the kill switch work at the system level?

An app-level kill switch stops that app leaking if the tunnel drops. A system-level kill switch stops the whole device leaking. If you trade, bank or work on untrusted networks, you want the second one. Also check the device limit: 7, 10, or unlimited changes the real price for a household.

Our picks, after running this checklist

Top pick: NordVPN — the freshest audit record in its class (Deloitte, December 2025), Panama jurisdiction, crypto checkout. Watch the renewal: $139.08/year. Visit NordVPN

Budget pick: Surfshark — unlimited devices, $67.23 for 27 months, the widest crypto checkout we compared, Deloitte audits in 2023 and 2025. The caveat is jurisdiction: Netherlands, inside Nine Eyes. Visit Surfshark
