CoinGecko is where most crypto holders start: free prices, market caps, volumes and exchange data for thousands of coins — and, behind that free website, a paid API whose price jumps fast once you need real volume or deep history.

For checking prices, CoinGecko is free and hard to beat — and that is the whole point. Open a coin page and you get the price, market cap, trading volume, circulating supply, price history and the exchanges where it trades, without paying or signing up. The paid side only matters if you are building something: the free Demo API tier gives 10,000 call credits a month at 100 calls a minute, and paid API plans start at $35 a month for 100,000 credits. For an everyday holder, the website costs nothing and does the job; for a developer, the question is not whether CoinGecko has the data, but which tier your call volume lands you on.

CoinGecko aggregates market data across thousands of coins and hundreds of exchanges into one readable page per asset: live price, market cap, 24-hour trading volume, price change, circulating and total supply, all-time high and low, and a chart you can stretch from an hour to all-time. Around that core sit exchange pages that rank venues by reported volume and a trust score, a portfolio tracker for coins you already hold, and category pages (layer-1s, DeFi, memecoins and the rest) for comparing a sector at a glance. The website is the product most people need; the API is a separate, developer-facing product that serves the same data to apps, dashboards and bots.
Use it if you check prices before you trade, you want a second opinion on a coin's volume and supply before believing a social-media claim, or you are building a dashboard and the free Demo tier covers your call volume. Do not rely on it alone if you need tick-level, real-time execution data — the free and entry API tiers cache data (60 seconds on Demo, 10 seconds on Basic in published comparisons), so it is a research tool, not a trading terminal — or if you need wallet balances and DeFi positions, which only arrive on higher API tiers and with limited chain coverage. And never treat a CoinGecko page as a buy signal: a listed price proves a coin trades, not that it is worth buying.
Start free, stay free, unless you are building on the API. For everyday checking, CoinGecko's website gives you the price, the volume and the venue context in one page — and that is exactly what a price tracker should do. Pay only when your app's call volume or history needs push you past the Demo tier, and check the current pricing page first: the tiers move.

HoardAds has not yet completed its own hands-on CoinGecko test cycle, and this review does not claim otherwise: it is built from CoinGecko's published specifications and pricing as reported in October 2026. When our own testing lands, this page will be updated and dated. If the evidence changes, the verdict changes — that is the deal.
