Verdict

Chatbase is a practical way to put an AI agent on a website that answers from your own content instead of generic model knowledge — provided you budget in message credits, not messages. Train it on your website, documents, Notion pages and Q&A pairs, embed the widget, and it handles the repetitive questions while handing the hard ones to a human. The catch is the meter: every reply costs credits depending on the model you pick, and an enabled action can double that cost, so a plan's credit allowance is not a conversation count. For a small site with steady, answerable questions, Hobby is a fair starting point; for a support team that needs a predictable bill, the credit model is the reason to pause.

What it does

Chatbase turns your existing content into an agent. Feed it a website crawl, uploaded files, pasted text, Notion pages or a list of questions and answers, and it builds a knowledge base the agent answers from — with sources it can point to, rather than inventing policy from general training. You pick a model from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, set the agent's personality and instructions, and embed it as a chat widget or connect it to messaging channels. From Standard up, the built-in helpdesk adds live human handoff, voice and telephony, outbound campaigns and API access; Pro adds advanced analytics and the ability to train on past support tickets via Zendesk or Salesforce. AI actions let an agent do more than answer: look up an order, process a Stripe refund or book an appointment, for example — at the cost of extra model requests.

Key features

Who should — and should not — buy it

Buy it if you already have help content worth answering from, you get the same questions every week, and you are happy to watch a credit meter for a month to learn your real burn rate. Hobby suits a solo builder or small site; Standard is the first tier that feels like a support tool rather than a widget, thanks to the helpdesk, voice and API. Skip it, or stay on the trial, if you need a predictable monthly bill, you need several bots (each extra agent is $25/month on top), you want a badge-free widget without paying $99/month, or you have almost no docs for it to learn from — an agent with nothing to read from will guess, and that is worse than no bot at all.

Limitations to know before you pay

Bottom line

Load your real docs, start the 7-day trial, and judge it on your ten most common questions — including one it should refuse or escalate. If the answers are accurate and the credit burn is comfortable, Hobby at $40/month is a reasonable place to start, stepping up to Standard when you need the helpdesk and voice. If the meter makes you nervous, that nervousness is the answer: pick a flat-priced support bot instead.
